Random ZIP Code Generator [Free Online]

A test fixture is ready to run, except its ZIP field is still empty. I can’t leave the key question alone: does a generated string correspond to a postal area, or just fit the field?

A generated value gives the test something concrete to send through the form. The tool’s return shows what kind of value you’re working with.

What the random ZIP code generator returns

A random ZIP code generator returns characters that fit a template. This page creates a five-digit United States string or a five-digit value followed by a hyphen and four more digits, alongside format-shaped strings for seven other country choices.

United States

5 digits (12345) or ZIP+4 format (12345-6789)

Canada

6 characters in format A1A 1A1 (alternating letters and numbers)

United Kingdom

Variable format: A9 9AA, A99 9AA, AA9 9AA, AA99 9AA, etc.

Germany

5 digits (12345)

The embedded code selects numbers and letters from fixed ranges, so its output can test field handling even though it never checks a postal-code directory.

SelectionWhat the generator makesWhat it does not establish
United StatesFive digits or five digits, a hyphen and four digitsAn assigned delivery area or address match
Other country selectionsA string built from the selected option’s letter-and-digit templateRecognition by the corresponding postal service

The United States Postal Service (USPS) says the extra four digits in ZIP+4 help sort mail to a specific street. Because the generator chooses the suffix without looking up an address, its sample cannot show that those digits match a street.

Choose format or geographic match first

Use a format check to test accepted characters and separators. Add a geographic lookup when your test depends on the place a postal code identifies.

  • Use sample strings to check accepted characters and hyphen handling in a form, so you can test its format rules without treating the output as postal evidence.
  • Use an official postal lookup or an address-linked dataset when the task depends on a delivery area.

AskPython’s RegEx Tester can help check how a postal-code field handles a sample string. A format test cannot tell you whether that code exists in a postal directory.

Generate ZIP code samples

Select the country, set the count, then generate or copy the list. The tool keeps those actions in one panel, so you can change the count and generate another set without leaving the page.

Step 1: Select a country

Choose United States for a ZIP-style sample, or pick one of the other seven country options for a different letter-and-digit template. The generator starts on United States with a count of five.

AskPython ZIP-code generator controls with United States selected, quantity five, and an empty results panel
The country and quantity controls sit above the results panel, which is empty before generation.

Step 2: Set the quantity

I set the count to 101 and got a range alert, so the earlier list remained visible. Set a value from 1 to 100 before copying.

Step 3: Generate and copy

Select Generate Zipcodes to replace the result list with the requested number of strings. The result counter updates and reveals Copy to Clipboard, which puts one generated string per line on the clipboard.

What format checks leave untested

I saw W0W 7A0 in the Canada result, and the United States branch selects five-digit values from 10000 through 99999.

Canada generator output: W0W 7A0
USPS ZIP Code example: 00501

Canada Post’s postal-code structure assigns the first letter to a geographic area and omits W, so W0W 7A0 cannot match one of its listed first-letter areas. USPS lists 00501 as a ZIP Code, so the generator’s range from 10000 through 99999 excludes that leading-zero example.

A regular expression can accept a string that a geographic join rejects. The generator also cannot produce leading-zero cases for a United States field.

Check a ZIP Code against USPS records

For mailing or place-based data, look up the address or city and state with the USPS ZIP Code Lookup. You can also search for cities covered by a ZIP Code, which answers a different question from generating a string.

USPS ZIP Code Lookup with options to search by address, city and state, or ZIP Code
USPS provides separate lookup paths for an address, a city and state, or a ZIP Code.

Keep the generator for text-format samples. When a place needs to line up with the code, use the postal service’s lookup instead.

Random ZIP code generator FAQ

Are the generated ZIP Codes assigned to postal areas?

The generator builds strings from numeric ranges and format templates without checking a postal-code directory, so some outputs may have no assigned area.

Does this generator look up my location?

The current generator does not ask for an address or use a location lookup. Its page code creates the selected string in the browser.

Can I use a random ZIP Code for a billing or country check?

Keep random output out of live billing or location checks. Use the account address or the service’s published test environment instead.
